How to anonymize a PDF before ChatGPT

Prepare a copy for AI analysis while keeping the original PDF on your device.

Why anonymize a PDF first?

A PDF can contain more private information than the sentence you intend to ask about. Names, email addresses, phone numbers, addresses, account identifiers and repeated company references can appear in headings, tables, footers or embedded images.

The safer workflow is to prepare a separate AI-ready copy. Keep the original unchanged, review every proposed replacement, then upload only the verified copy to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or another service.

A review-first workflow

AnonymizeDocs reads the selected file in your browser. It does not upload the original document to AnonymizeDocs. The detected values are shown for your approval before a new copy is exported.

  • Select the PDF from your device and wait for local analysis to finish.
  • Review names, organizations, brands, addresses, contact details and identifiers.
  • Accept, ignore or edit findings. Repeated values use consistent placeholders.
  • Choose AI-ready placeholders or permanent redaction, then export and verify the result.

What to check before uploading the copy

Search the exported PDF for the original values. Inspect the first page, headers, footers, tables and attachments or images. A visual black rectangle is not enough if the original text remains searchable underneath it.

Scanned pages and embedded images are reviewed with local OCR. OCR can miss characters, so treat the findings as candidates and inspect the output before sharing it.

Important: AnonymizeDocs is a document preparation tool, not legal advice or a guarantee that every sensitive value has been found.
