How to safely upload a contract to ChatGPT

Start with the sharing question

Before uploading a contract, decide which facts the AI actually needs. A useful analysis may require party roles, obligations, dates and amounts, but not the real names, addresses, email addresses or account numbers.

Create a separate working copy. Never modify the only original version of a signed agreement or client file.

Anonymize parties without breaking context

Replace repeated parties consistently, for example with [PARTY_A] and [PARTY_B]. Keep the role and relationship visible so the AI can still distinguish buyer, seller, employer, employee, landlord or tenant.

• Replace people, companies, brands and property addresses that are not needed for the question.
• Replace email, phone, bank, tax, case and registration identifiers.
• Review exhibits, schedules, signatures, headers, footers and embedded images.
• Search the final copy for known names and identifiers before upload.

Use AI as an assistant, not a confidentiality control

An AI provider's privacy settings and retention terms are separate from document preparation. Removing unnecessary identifiers reduces exposure, but it does not replace reviewing the provider's terms or following your professional obligations.
